Mubi, the arthouse streamer/distributor, has acquired worldwide rights to 'Making Marie Antoinette', a behind-the-scenes documentary on the production of Sofia Coppola's iconic 2006 costume drama. This marks a significant collaboration between Mubi and Sofia Coppola, who is renowned for her unique voice and sensibility in filmmaking. The documentary, directed by Sofia's late mother, Eleanor Coppola, offers a captivating glimpse into the making of 'Marie Antoinette' through more than 80 hours of footage she shot on set. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Rose Byrne, and Jamie Dornan, and won an Oscar for Milena Canonero's costume design. Sofia Coppola expressed her appreciation for her mother's work, stating that she and her mother had been going through the footage during lockdown, fulfilling Eleanor's wish to create a feature-length documentary. The film's production team includes Sofia Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, and Youree Henley, with Aaron Matthews handling the editing and Davia Nelson and Liz Bird providing input. The documentary is financed by Mediawan-owned Our Films and Entourage Pictures. Mubi's founder, Efe Cakarel, praised Sofia Coppola's influence and the film's bold, beautiful, and irreverent nature, emphasizing the emotional impact of revisiting the production through Eleanor Coppola's perspective. This collaboration builds upon Mubi's previous release of Sofia Coppola's 'Priscilla', which was well-received internationally. Mubi plans to announce the release plans for 'Making Marie Antoinette' soon, marking another significant addition to their arthouse collection.
